Deep tissue

Tailored to you

When you feel discomfort during certain movements or when you think that a relaxation massage won’t be enough to release your muscles, Deep Tissue is what you need. It is usually used for specific areas and/or needs where you have accumulated tension for a long period of time.

In our society, and from my experience, the majority of people suffer from neck and shoulder pain due to either:

  • the posture behind the computer

  • over-exercising and compromising the upper trapezius (the neck muscles that connects head, shoulder and spine); or

  • because we regularly lift and hold our kids on the same side.

This neck pain can then induce a headache. With a relaxing head massage this can be released! Starting from the origin of the neck muscles positioned on your head, up to your frontal muscles of your forehead and all the way to the temporalis (the muscles on the side of your head).

However, Deep Tissue can cover every part of the body: from helping release your muscles after a hip replacement to a sore forearm due to rock climbing, from a stiff calf to uncomfortable lower back pain, from tight feet to tensed pectoralis.

There is an understandable misconception about the Deep Tissue technique. Deep tissue doesn’t mean using thumbs or elbows and pressing down as far as the therapist can! The truth about this technique is that the area that is going to be treated has to be warm to help the superficial muscles release, which then allows you to access the deeper ones. Most importantly, during the Deep Tissue massage you shouldn’t feel any pain at all!! “No pain, no gain” doesn’t work for this technique.

In summary, during a Deep Tissue massage we spend enough time warming up the area and then slowly work our way to reach deeper muscles that might be tighter than the superficial ones. If the superficial muscles won’t let go, there is no point trying to reach the deeper muscles.

☝️ Most importantly: don’t be afraid to communicate with the therapist about the level of pressure that you like.
